Device Offers Vital Air Supply
Date Posted : Jul 02, 2008
ENGLAND -- People who work in hazardous environments have welcomed a new escape breathing device designed and developed by a company as one of the most effective pieces of life-saving equipment in the market today.

The Head10 oxygen escape set won the British Safety Industry Federation's Safety Innovation award last year. It is a self-contained unit that improves the safety of those working in restricted or hazardous environments by providing the user with a nominal 10-minute supply of oxygen in an emergency.

Developed by aircraft ground support equipment manufacturer Semmco of England (http://www.semmco.com), Head10 is a lightweight and easy-to-operate-and-wear device that provides 10 vital minutes of breathing time in emergencies such as escaping from a building filled with smoke or dangerous chemical fumes.

Head10 is supplied in either a wall-mounted box or a bandolier carry bag and sealed in an aluminium foil vacuum container. A unique visual indicator constantly shows the unit's integrity and condition, allowing it to be stored and ready for use without the need for servicing for an initial six-year period.

Traditionally, this type of equipment is bulky, heavy and offered only five to 10 minutes of breathing time.

Head10's inventor Stuart McOnie said: "The Head10 is a totally new concept in escape breathing apparatus and we spent a phenomenal amount of time developing a design that is innovative, extremely efficient and incredibly comfortable.

"Employee safety is a major priority and anyone working in a confined, restricted or hazardous environments should be aware that equipment like Head10 is available."

Clive Parkinson, director of the health and safety executive at Sussex University, southern England, who has had the equipment installed in laboratory areas in the university and for use by the university rescue team, said: "The units are a significant improvement on our previous short duration breathing apparatus. The training required for users is minimal and there is no maintenance or maintenance cost for at least six years."

Since the product was commercially launched, British companies as diverse as British Nuclear Fuels and Jersey Telecom have bought the Head10 and there is a strong interest from continental Europe. - LPS
