INSECTICIDES HAVE LASTING EFFECT Farmers report neurological ills
Date Posted : Apr 14, 2009
Farmers who used agricultural insecticides experienced increased neurological symptoms, even when they were no longer using the products, new research shows. The ongoing Agricultural Health Study, a collaboration of a consortium of government agencies, surveyed farmers in North Carolina and Iowa. Over 18,000 completed questionnaires on lifetime exposure to herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and fumigants and on their history of 23 neurological symptoms.
Data linked use of insecticides, including organophospates and organochlorines, to reports of reoccurring headaches, fatigue, insomnia, dizziness, nausea, hand tremors, numbness and other neurological symptoms. Some of these products are still on the market while others, such as DDT, are now banned or restricted.
